11-17-11 Today i ventured out and tore down an older fort down where we are starting to build  our new 6 bedroom reunion lake home. It will be right next to the swimming pool and above the beach. This lake home will be great for the families with small kids since it is close to all the fun activities. We do have 2"-3" of snow right now and the lake is right on the edge of freezing. It will be on the verge of freezing the whole lake tonight if the wind dies down. 

Minnesota Birding Report

This is a great time to travel Hwy. 61 along the Mississippi River to view amazing numbers of waterfowl, including large numbers of tundra swans. Weaver Bottoms in the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent place to view a variety of species. And thousands of Sandhill Cranes are making their way through Minnesota. Many of these birds stage at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge for several weeks to put on weight before the remainder of their trip south.

The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:
Paul Johnson photographed a Carolina Wren on November 6th at his feeder in Pine City in Pine County.
Jim Lind found the first Townsend's Solitaire of the fall season on November 9th. It was in Duluth Township along West Knife River Road, roughly one-third of a mile west of Homestead Road.
More than 5800 Sandhill Cranes were still at the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge in Sherburne County on the 10th. And two very late Tree Swallows were seen near the refuge headquarters on the 8th.
 A Field Sparrow was lingering at Hyland Park Reserve in Bloomington on November 7th.
And Doug Kieser reports that he found Black Scoter, White-Winged Scoter, and Surf Scoter at Taconite Harbor in Cook County on November 7th.

11-15-11 Today i have to get some of the dock legs welded on and moved before the snow starts flying. We did get some of the older dock into our new place we are putting it. I am adding some dock thru some cattail in front of #1 & #2 reunion lake homes. The new dock will help easy the congestion on our main dock. White Birch Resort is gearing up for the winter ice fishing season here in Minnesota. I usually have a ice house out on Thanksgiving weekend but right now there is no sign of ice right now. The new snowmobile trail right out the door of our cabins sure has added the trails here in Northern Minnesota.

11-14-11 Today i took the boys hunting but did not see anything. Hopefully we can get out again this next weekend before hunting season comes to an end. 11-13-11 Today was a Sunday and a day of church and relaxation. It does look like winter is right up on us this next week. We have had some pretty nice weather for our fall. Monday morning i am taking the boys hunting here in Minnesota for the first time. It should be really interesting since they will have to sit still in the woods and it looks like the temp will be a little cold.

The reunion homes on White Birch Resort property have been the biggest improvements on the resort. The first  reunion home was done in 2005. This home was a remodel of the old owners home. The job was quit a task for Monte to do over the winter but it sure was a big asset to the resorts new life. 

 Then in 2009 we added a luxury 6 bedroom 3000 sq ft reunion home on the resort. Even in the down turn of the economy it was still a big success. The next year we took off from any major building projects and did some smaller jobs.

 In 2011 we broke ground the 2nd week in Feb. on our next reunion home, which was quite nerve racking. We did have to put into some long days of work but did get it done for our first guest on May 13th. The out door hot tub in this reunion home was a big hit for everyone. Also we did plant over 100 trees on the resort which was really needed since the older growth is on its way out. another thing we added to the resort was 3 huge water trampolines and a water ball. These really got the use by resort guests all summer long.
